Keynote - Tatham Oddie

Ready for Next

This year, we celebrate 10 years of the iPhone: a device that remodelled awkward business PDAs into pervasive internet access. For a significant portion of society, they're now embedded into everything we do. I struggle to buy a coffee now if my phone is flat, and no coffee = no function. In this talk, we'll explore what the next wave of technology upsets might be, and what skills we'll need to level up at to stay on the front of that wave.

With experience ranging from his own small businesses, to large multi-year multi-vendor banking programs, Tatham has developed a deep understanding of the complete lifecycle of IT programs and their surrounding business drivers. He is a regular presenter at conferences and events throughout Australia, North America, and Europe. In his role as Readify's CIO, Tatham helps Readify improve its own processes, as well as those of our customers.

Locknote - Katie McLaughlin

JavaScript is Awe-Ful

JavaScript is an incredibly powerful language, and thanks to its renaissance, it now has uses that extend beyond the browser. However, being a language that's extremely accessible, with a shallow learning curve and large userbase, it's the subject of - at times - vitriolic abuse from other language communities. Yes, JavaScript was created in a very short timeframe, and there are inherent issues with some very early design decisions that can cause some grief to developers. However, as the engine that powers the web, it's able to prove it's versatility and usefulness. So why the hate? In this talk, we will discuss the history of JavaScript, it's future, and how some it's 'wat's can be avoided in everyday use in other to leverage the power of this universal language. We will also take a short tour through over a dozen other languages and some of their quirks, to prove how no language is without fault.

Katie has worn many different hats over the years. She has been a software developer for many languages, systems administrator for multiple operating systems, and speaker on many different topics. When she's not changing the world, she enjoys cooking, making tapestries, and yelling at JavaScript and its attempt at global variables.

How much is the event?
Early Bird $49, GA $59. DDD Sydney is a non profit event and any excess will be kept as part of a fund for future events/donated to charity.

Will refreshments be provided?
Yes, delegates will receive lunch and snacks throughout the day. Sadly we are restricted from running a coffee cart by the university but there are many cafes and coffee shops in the local area & on campus.

Will wireless access be available?
Probably not.

Can I pay by cheque, invoice, cash, Coinye West?
No - this year all payments will be via EventBrite. It's vastly easier for us as organisers to only accept payments using EventBrite, which currently doesn't allow payments to be made by Diners or rapper themed bitcoins. Please consider using EventBrite with your own credit card, and claiming it back on expenses. The cost is low, so it should easily fall within your expenses limit!

Can I cancel/give my ticket to someone else?
You are welcome to send someone else in your place. Please do this through the Eventbrite system. For help on how to do this refer to:

When does registration open?
It's open now!

What is the hashtag for DDD Sydney?
The twitter hashtag will be #dddsyd.

How long will the sessions be? Sessions will have an hour time slot, feel free to use as much of that as you want. We'll have 3 tracks on the day, and the number of sessions per track will depend on the number of submissions. The more submissions the more sessions we'll be able to run (well, within reason :P).

I want to be involved. Can I help?
Thanks but we have enough assistance for running the event now. However we would love to have your session submission.

How can I contact the organizers?
We can be contacted via email at:

I would like to sponsor DDD Sydney
Great! DDD Sydney will be heavily publized in related websites and we believe offers a fantastic marketing opportunity as well as the ability to support the local development community. We have various levels of sponsor ship available and opportunities for logo placement on the website, agenda, delegate slides, speaker tshirts and we are happy to include advertisements in delegate packs. For more information please email

Who is coordinating this event?
DDD Sydney is coordinated by SydDev Inc, a non-profit organisation set up to improve the learnings of the Australian developer community.

Photography & Video
Attendees may be photographed or filmed by media personnel authorised by SydDev Inc. Attendees must inform said media personnel if they do not wish to be photographed or filmed.

I would like to do this kind of thing more often
Why not consider attending one of the local user groups.

DDD Sydney will be held at UTS, in level 3 of the Peter Johnson Building (CB06), with the entrance via Harris Street. The full address is 702-730 Harris Street, Broadway, NSW 2007.

Alternatively you can ask our bot how to get there ;).

UTS's website details the location.

The nearest train station is Central Station and UTS is a 2 minute walk from there.

There's plenty of buses that run down Paramatta Road and stop at UTS.

Paid car parking is available around the university but keep in mind that this is pretty central so it won't be easy to find nor will it be cheap. Catch public transport ;).
